OpenatownRisk REVIVED! in mobile format. UPDATE: The Site is back up as well!

by pnksniper on Jul.30, 2008, under Nokia

So I was looking through the download section of the E71 trying to find some new programs when I noticed a new icon titled “News&Info”. Inside to my surprise was a icon labeled “Secret”, and within that folder were three categories (the application, the ringtone, the wallpaper).  The wallpaper and ringtone are both nice…. But the application takes a bit to figure out.  I’m guessing when you enter the correct 4 digit code something happens, Ill update when I figure it out. This is no doubt linked to the recent OpenatOwnRisk viral site that Nokia launched a couple months ago, but was taken down. Update: The site is back up : head over to http://www.openatownrisk.com/main.swf. But A majority of the tasks cannot be completed unless you have a Nokia phone, web cam, and microphone.  The mystery still continues….. :P

Added video of the ringtone :

Nokia E-71 Grey Review!

by pnksniper on Jul.24, 2008, under E71, Nokia

It’s been almost a week and I must say that the hype the Nokia E-71 is generating is for good reason. The phone is sleek with its mostly metal exterior and thin at only 10mm.  Yet the phone packs a 3.2MP camera with video recording capability, music/video player, Wi-Fi, GPS, 2.4″ screen @ 16 million colors, and last but not least full QWERTY keyboard.  But the question that comes to mind, “Does this phone excel in all those categories?” After all it is an E-series focused mainly on business consumers/needs.  Let’s find out.

Nokia E-71 Initial Thoughts

by pnksniper on Jul.19, 2008, under E71, Nokia, Uncategorized

Ive been using the Nokia E-71 for three days and I must say this device is great.  There are some things that I don’t care for but here are my initial thoughts, any questions about the device leave a comment below and I’ll get to it.
Enjoy!

Pros:

  • This phone is built like a tank. The body is mostly metal with only two panels that are plastic.  This phone does not have creaks.
  • The speed of the device is amazing! Lightning quick to open up applications.  Everything is snappy (Internet, Nokia maps, camera initialization, etc) I will install 3rd party apps to test this further. But so far no gripes here.
  • The phone is thin.
  • QWERTY Keyboard!  Mashing out text and going online feels natural utilizing the full keyboard.

Cons:

  • I don’t know if this is due to the metal casing but the phone has weak reception (still testing).
  • The speaker on the unit is loud but not loud enough.  It is suitable for use indoors but when trying to use it outdoors the speaker sounds faint.
  • The speaker for the earpiece is faint.
  • QWERTY Keyboard! I’m on day three of using the phone and I feel that the keys are a little on the small side.  Maybe it takes a little more time to get used to.  The keyboard on the top and center area lifts up from the handset (not a huge issue, just something I noticed initially)

Only some initial impressions, the full review is coming. So stay tuned!

E-71 Carnival Test shots.

by pnksniper on Jul.18, 2008, under E71, Nokia

Today I hit the local carnival and decided to test out the E-71’s ability to take photos and movies. Most of the photos were taken at dusk or night time. The E-71 did not fair so well in either category but we do have to remember that this is a business phone. Although the colors and quality are not all that great it works when you dont have a camera with you. The 640×480 @ 15fps is definetly a huge difference compared to the N-series offerings and is apparent when you watch the sample video I posted. Enjoy!

And the sample movie:

FlipSilent Signed!

by pnksniper on Jul.17, 2008, under Uncategorized

No longer is it necessary to jump through hoops and sign apps to enjoy this great app.  FlipSilent is a program that allows for accelerometer based S60 (N82, N95, N95 8GB) devices to be silenced with the flip of the phone (FlipSilent explains this as interacting with the phone in a more natural way).  This works for incoming calls and also the alarm clock.  Enjoy!
