While the 5MP Carl Zeiss lens has long been used since the days of the N95 almost 3 years ago its still a great lens that offers speed and performance.  That would explain why Nokia chose to go with this lens for even its newer line of mobile devices such as the N97 and N900.  I decided to do some experimentation with the lens by shooting day and night shots of the same location so you would be able to see the difference.  Without further ado, I present the N900 camera overview and photo/video presentation.

First I decided that the most exciting thing to test out was how well the N900 shot video.  Below I have posted two shots in the exact same location. One shot during the day and the other at night.

You can see that the N900 does a fairly nice job of taking video during the daytime.  The video looks to take in detail well and only has a slight stutter.  The sound is also clear with it capturing both sounds that were close (the gentlemen in the truck saying “hey buddy”) and far (the cars and atmosphere noise).  Night time videos were a little different seeing as how the dual LED flash can only reach so far.  The image captured seemed darker and the colors always shifting (around the 10 sec. mark the lights go from white to yellow).

The photo taking capabilities of the N900 are mixed.  While the N900 generally takes favorable, clear, vibrant photos, there were exceptions when the photos would come up hazy.  This would mainly occur during day shots.  Night time photos seem to be affected with a different kind of haze and always had grain. Similar to the issue with the N97 the N900 also has flash interference as can be seen in a majority of the night shots in the upper right hand corner.  Other than this the N900 has a strong camera with a great set of options.  One of the best cameras 5MP cameras to date that I have used.
