The new Symbian OS has finally made its debut in the form of a video posted by Nokia. Although much of the”new” elements are pretty standard fare in most other OS’s its still good to know Symbian is headed in the right direction in preparation for eventual release of Symbian^4. The OS looks snappy and exactly what users are looking for in future handsets. I still see some of the old UI design elements but overall this is a huge step forward. Catch the video for all the details.

Multiple Home screen pages

Customizable wallpaper, widgets, applications

HW accelerated support

Flip scrolling and single tap in UI

Pinch Zoom

Visual Multi-tasking

While Ovi Maps Navigation has been free for over a week now, N97 users were left in the cold when Nokia decided not to include it in its list of compatible devices. This week brings great news from Nokia with official support for the N97. The Ovi Maps Navi update is available through OTA update (applications>software update) or via PC at nokia.com/softwareupdate.

ALK Technologies was on hand to demo its latest navigation software for WinMo, Android, and the Iphone. CoPilot Live 8 is the latest in a long line of trusted navigation software which not only improves upon from previous versions but is going head to head with Google Maps navigation on the Android platform. Interestingly, the booth was set up with mainly Android based devices (Motorola DROID and Google Nexus One) and visitors had the ability to freely play with the unit. Upon first encounter the software was smooth, bright and the buttons were easily accessible. Pricing for the software is 34.95 (take notes Nokia) one time rate. This means that once you purchase it you own it. No monthly fees for navigation, POI, etc. I certainly hope the ALK will consider authoring something for Symbian and Maemo in the near future. Symbian is a stretch but Maemo could happen.

34.95 for full license

Available for Android, WinMo, and Iphone
